Bio

Hey, what’s up? My name is Colin Malloy (in case it wasn’t clear from the site URL) and I’m a musician from Portland, Oregon. I’m mainly a percussionist and composer, but I also perform on the Japanese koto and guitar from time to time. My passion in life is to study and perform music while traveling the world.

I play a diverse set of percussion instruments including: drum set, steel drums, snare drum, timpani, marimba, vibraphone, congas, tabla, and many others. I have also taken classes in Japanese taiko and Brazilian samba drumming.

I graduated from Whitman College in 2008 with a B.A. in Pure Mathematics, but I realized I wasn’t very interested in the jobs I had qualified myself for. So six month later I opted to enroll at Oregon State University to get a degree in percussion and music education. I graduated summa cum laude in 2011 with a B.S. in Music.

I currently play vibes with the Mount Hood Community College Jazz Band, fill in for the OSU-Corvallis Symphony Orchestra, and perform with the Oregon Koto-kai koto ensemble – and this is all in addition to my own solo gigs. I am also the TA for Dr. Dana Reason, co-teaching her online popular music classes at OSU. These classes include World Music, History of Hip Hop, History of Film Music, and History of the Beatles.

I am currently applying to graduate schools for a Masters of Music in Percussion Performance. If you’d like to hear about my wanderings of the world and musings about music and percussion please subscribe to the blog. This site is still in its infancy, but hopefully with your help I can help it grow into a nice place to keep people informed about my various thoughts, projects and performances.
